All brands are expecting a dramatic decrease in camera sales in 2020. Upcoming statistic will show how much the pandemic decimated the camera market last year.
Today, let’s name the main trends of 2020’s end and look forward for upcoming changes. The obvious conclusion is that we can expect three main brands Canon, Nikon, and Sony will stay on the top by results of 2020.
Total ILC sales in 2019:
Canon: 4.16 million.
Nikon: 1.73 million.
Sony: 1.66 million.
Fujifilm: 500,000.
Olympus: 330,000.
Others: 280,000.
The biggest and most dramatic change in 2020 ILC market is quitting of Olympus. After 84 years of image cameras production the company is selling off this part of the business. It’s very very disappointing situation, however pandemic wasn’t the main reason of Olympus fall (it’s just accelerate the process) the biggest factor was progress of smartphone photo capabilities, which had shrunk the market for designated cameras. Olympus had recorded losses for the last three years and finally was forced to made this hard decision.
In 2021 Olympus market share will be divided between Panasonic and Fujifilm in the most. Panasonic has already surpass Olympus on Japan market in 2019 and will continue deploy more efforts for further worldwide expansion with new full frame and Micro 4/3rd models.
At the same time Fujifilm is continuously increase their market share through the number of years and has very steady strategy for further move. It’s hard to say how challenging Panasonic expansion will be for Fujifilm, I’m expecting Panasonic will develop its business faster. The companies didn’t compete directly due to rather different views on digital camera market. Both have significant armies of users and keep very strong positions in their niches.
Despite the sales plummeting by pandemic in 2020 all companies will continue develop and deliver new models at the market in 2021 and further. We will follow up the major camera trends and represent new reviews as the changes became actual.
